Pocket Pieces
Does anyone here carry around a "pocket piece"? If so, what do you carry around and why?
I have a Ben Franklin half dollar, 1951, probably F - XF except for dings along the rim which make it a cull and of no numismatic value. I cleaned it with baking soda/water so that it shines. I wouldn't clean or carry around a numismatic piece. Why do I carry it around? Not sure. :albertein I just like to take it out now and then, rub it, listen to it ring against the desk top. I'm not superstitious, it's not a lucky piece. One experiment I'd like to try in a crowded room is to let it ring on a desk top and see if anyone turns to listen. Fellow coin collectors and silver lovers should recognize the ring instantly! |

Re: Pocket Pieces
I carry a SAE. I love the looks of the young cashiers when I pull it out with my change. Surprises me how many people have never seen one.

Re: Pocket Pieces
WOW, thought I was unique. I carry a SAE 2001. Keep it in a plastic holder so that it keeps it shine. Have to agree that I like the sound and feel of it also enjoy bringing it out for others to peruse.

Re: Pocket Pieces
I carry around an 1884 Morgan dollar. I have had it along time and it is F-XF shape only with minor ware and tear. Yes it is my lucky peice and has served me well.

Re: Pocket Pieces
Today I'm carrying an 1882 Eagle Ten Dollar Gold coin !
A few weeks ago it was a 1927 St. Gaudens..... Before that either a Morgan or a Peace.... Always a different coin (or round) - but for now it's GOLD. |
Re: Pocket Pieces
I used to carry a gold Britannia but I got worried about losing it, so now I carry a SAE. It is fun to show people. Interestingly, almost everyone comments on the face value..."I thought silver was worth more than that." Well, yes, it is.....

Re: Pocket Pieces
Good to see I'm not the only one. I always carry with me a 1923 Peace dollar, and ofcourse a $10 silver Liberty piece.
I use to carry around a 1910 St. Gaudens, and a 1917 $10 Indian until I realized how much FRNs I was carrying about. :stickyman I don't get mugged, but I would be really sore if those golden coins were swiped. I wouldn't care if the same number of FRNs were taken. The Great Ag |

Yeah, while at my wife's friend's house, I whipped out my $20 Gold piece and showed them.......my wife exclaimed - "You brought that with you !!!" With a look of amazement, her friend asked - "How much is it worth ?".......and I replied casually - oh about $800 (Gold was up back then and I tacked on a little numismatic value)..... "Whooooooooooooa.......I better give this back to you." - she cradled it henceforth like it was a rare 3000 year old Egyptian artifact. What a show. :haha: |
Re: Pocket Pieces
I carry a Constitution Mint 1 oz. Ag round to keep me on track regarding the failing worth of FRNs.
The obverse is struck with the sailing ship U.S.S. Constitution and the caption "Honest Value Never Fails". The reverse shows "Art. 1 Sec. 10 U.S. Constitution "No state shall make anything Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debt..." |
Re: Pocket Pieces
I was thinking, if we were ever mugged, would the thief actually know the coin was gold or silver and worth a lot more than the face value?
"I don't want that yellow junk, just give me your money!" :haha: The Great Ag |

Re: Pocket Pieces
I too carry a silver eagle pocket piece. It helps remind me to save rather than to spend on things I don't need.

Re: Pocket Pieces
I sometimes am tempted to use a SAE for a purchase. I can almost guarantee no one would take it around where I live. The responses would be, A-Thats not real American money. B-We dont accept commemorative coins. C-They dont make dollar coins that big.
